Flying With a Baby

Your first flight with a baby can feel daunting. Between the packing, the security queues, and the fear of a mid-flight meltdown, it’s enough to make you consider a staycation instead.

But thousands of families fly with babies every single day and with a bit of planning, it really doesn’t have to be stressful. Here are eight tried-and-tested tips to make your next family trip as smooth as possible.

1. Book the Right Seat

If your baby is under two and flying on your lap, request a bulkhead seat - these are the rows with extra legroom, and many airlines can attach a bassinet to the wall in front of you. Book early, as these seats go quickly. If your baby is older or you’ve bought them their own seat, an aisle seat gives you easy access for quick nappy changes and walkabouts.

2. Pack Smart, Not Heavy

You don’t need to bring your entire nursery. Focus on the essentials: nappies, wipes, a change of clothes (for baby and you), snacks, a favourite toy, and a muslin. Roll items tightly and use packing cubes to keep your changing bag organised.

EasyBub tip: Rent your travel pram and cot instead of hauling them through the airport. We’ll deliver to your door before you leave or even to your holiday accommodation within the UK.

3. Feed During Take-Off and Landing

The change in cabin pressure during ascent and descent can cause discomfort in little ears. Breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, or offering a dummy during these moments encourages swallowing, which helps equalise the pressure and keeps your baby comfortable.

4. Time Your Flight Around Naps

Whenever possible, choose flights that overlap with your baby’s usual nap or bedtime. A sleeping baby is a happy baby  and a happy parent. For long-haul flights, an evening departure can work wonders.

5. Get Through Security Without the Stress

Baby milk, formula, and sterilised water are exempt from the usual liquids rule - you can carry as much as you need for the journey. Have these items easily accessible so you can present them quickly at the security checkpoint. Foldable prams usually need to go through the X-ray machine, but cabin crew will help you gate-check if needed.

6. Bring a Carrier for the Airport

A baby carrier is an absolute lifesaver in airports. It keeps your hands free for luggage, boarding passes, and coffee, while keeping your baby close and calm. A structured carrier like the BabyBjörn Mini is lightweight enough to pop in your hand luggage when you don’t need it.

EasyBub tip: You can rent a BabyBjörn carrier from us - perfect if you only need one for your trip.

7. Consider a JetKids BedBox

For toddlers with their own seat, the JetKids BedBox is a game-changer. It’s a ride-on suitcase that converts into an in-flight bed, giving your little one a flat surface to sleep on during the flight. It’s one of our most-rented items for a reason.

8. Give Yourself Grace

Babies cry. Toddlers have meltdowns. Other passengers have been there too (and if they haven’t, they’ll survive). You’re doing an amazing job simply by being brave enough to travel with your little one. Take a breath, trust your preparation, and enjoy the adventure.
